Tornado, originally code
named "Metro," was one of those coasters where you clicked on
a link to construction photos and your jaw dropped. First thing
that I thought when I saw the construction photos was "There is no
way they can do that!" What I am referring to is the barrel roll,
or heartline through a tunnel, looking as if there wasn't enough
legroom, let along enough room for just the train to fit through.
The enclosure that houses that tunnel is also the same building used for
the station, as well as the track leading to the lift hill.
Finding good construction photos for this ride was tough, and most of the photos only revealed the second half of the ride. After completing the animation, I later found photos of the ride that showed a large trench after the first vertical loop, something that I had not seen in any other photo. I had also constructed the first inversion with supports exactly the same as Intamin's first inverted coaster, also named Tornado. That structure was a lot more complex than what this Tornado ended up having. And so, I decided to redo the first loop's supports and the trench afterwards, resulting in the final animation of the ride. This is definitely one coaster that I would love to experience, although I am positive I will not find myself in Finland anytime soon :(. Maybe one day, a park in the U.S. will build a coaster as unique as Tornado while incorporating some thrilling elements, such as the barrel roll through the tunnel. -Keith McVeen |
